THE COMMONWEALTH

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal member states. Although the Commonwealth’s roots go back to the British Empire, today any country can join the Commonwealth family of nations, which share goals of development, democracy, and peace amongst other values and principles as expressed in the Commonwealth Charter

The next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth will come from Africa

The election of Secretary-General follows the principle of rotation among the five Commonwealth regions. In line with this tradition, the next Secretary-General will be chosen from Africa. This will be the second time an African assumes the position since Chief Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria in West Africa, who served as Commonwealth Secretary-General from 1990 to 2000.

A responsive and fortified Commonwealth

Commonwealth Nations' Flag

My adherence to the Commonwealth Charter is derived from witnessing the Commonwealth providing valuable technical and political support to my own country Lesotho, similar small and developing member states across the Commonwealth, and the commitment and significance of the Secretary-General’s Good Offices in supporting the resolution of political crises across the Commonwealth. I believe that this well rounded and extensive knowledge of the Commonwealth puts me in a strong position to lead a Commonwealth that amplifies the aspirations and potential of its member countries to address global challenges and lead transformation at the Secretariat.

Joshua Phoho Setipa - Commonwealth Secretary-General

Joshua Phoho Setipa

I am honored to present my candidature for the esteemed position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

I am deeply grateful to my government for endorsing my candidacy, making me the first Lesotho national to seek this prestigious role. This is a testament to Lesotho’s commitment to the values, principles, and objectives of the Commonwealth, as well as my unwavering dedication to serving its diverse membership.

My Vision

As a candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, my vision is driven by a profound sense of urgency to strengthen the organisation and empower it to effectively confront the emerging global challenges that confront us, notably those intensified by the pandemic and climate change.

Recognising the paramount importance of economic growth, I will prioritise trade and investment by fostering a vibrant and competitive environment that leverages the unique strengths of our member states.

I will resolutely champion public sector reforms that emphasise transparency and innovation. These reforms will enhance participation in democratic processes for all, and especially empower marginalized communities.

I am committed to forging a Commonwealth that is resilient, responsive, and a beacon of hope for generations to come

Joshua Phoho Setipa - candidate of the commonwealth secretary general

I will prioritise robust resilience and adaptation measures, particularly for our vulnerable small island developing states. Our focus will involve scaling up access to climate finance, advocating for sustainable ocean governance, and leveraging the potential of Blue Economies.

My vision of a fortified Commonwealth is  a realistic, innovative and  transformative plan that embraces change, innovation, and collaboration with members to effectively address the needs and aspirations of our member states. As Secretary-General, I pledge to work tirelessly with the Board of Governors to foster unity and co-operation, and diligently working towards a prosperous, equitable, and sustainable Commonwealth
